Thanks to everyone for the suggestions - dead chicken made a horrible mess
of the carpet...

but seriously :

No adb keyboard, can't be this.

Nope - authentic apple supplied cd in exchange for my hard earned cash.

Nope - upgraded to 9.1 and also done firmware.

Yes! Thanks Groucho - but i tried removing all but one stick and it still
won't play...

any more ideas??

as a side note, this cd was used to do a successful install on a cube*
already - so i don't think that the cd is actually faulty, especially as it
also shows up on the desktop etc.

thanks again

frank

* since then i've decided to run X on the G4 tower instead, so the cube
installation has gone and been replaced with 9.1 (just in case anyone
suspects me of blatant software piracy)

when I bought OS X it came with a separate OS 9.1 CD
