Thanks for the suggestion.  I tried it.  By the way, my G4 seems to take
longer between each chime than my old beige Macs did.  I still don't get any
sound though.

The sound control panel tells me to "choose a device for sound output," but
the list it gives me is empty.  How do I put a device in the list so I can
select it?  Any ideas?
