As I understand it, OS X has no support for built in serial.

I don't think having a SCSI scanner per say is a problem, it does 
depend on whether the vender has a OS X version.

That sounds like a big pain in the neck.  I don't print all that much 
but when I do, I don't like to wait around to be able to print.  At 
one time the only printer I had was my ancient ImageWriter which 
barely printed anyways.  I sometimes gave a disk to my wife to take 
to her work to print.  I think having to switch OSes would be only a 
step or two up fromthat.

I would suggest you upgrade to at least 9.1.  It has been very stable for me.
