Hi guys,

After taking in the advice I recieved from a few people in this group on
cooling my G4 upgraded biege desktop, I went and bought a few things.

First off I decided to remove the scsi hard drive from the lower bay as it
was generating alot of heat. I got a hard drive cooler fan for it and
installed in the floppy drive bay. I don't use the floppy anymore so won't
miss it. The hard drive fan just screws to the bottom of the hard drive and
blows air on to the main part of the drive. Before I added this to the hard
drive, after a few hours use it would be very warm too touch. Now its nice
and cool. So that should help in removing alot of heat from the lower
levels.

Next came the processor. I picked up a CoolerMaster chipset fan... its
really for applying to graphics card chipsets and came with a tiny heatsink.
I removed that and added the fan to the top of the processor heatsink. I got
this fan as it was the only one that was thin enough to fit and allow the
top chasis to close down. I've looked on CoolerMasters website to find
details on it but its not listed in their products page.

Anyway since I've done these few bits, the tempature of the processor is
around 48 degrees celcius, jumping to 64 when I have a few applications
running. So the fan hasn't impacted that much. What I plan to do next is to
drill some ventilation holes above the processor heatsink to allow the fan
to draw more air through the top compartment... since its so close to the
chasis I feel it can't pull in very much air. I may also add another fan of
the same type to the side of the heatsink as I have a spare power plug and I
might aswell use it. Having 2 fans, one blowing down and the other blowing
across should help. I will also get some thermal goop for the heatsink and
add that.

I'm a bit reluctant to mess with changing the fan in the powersupply to a
higher rate cfm model for the moment, but if I come across one I might give
it a try.

Any thoughts would be welcomed,

thanks to all who provided me with tips and advice,

Niall
