Back in '96, '97, we had banks of SCSI Seagates, Ultra fast wide, or
something like that which were in raid configuration on folks desks. They
were LOUD, LOUD, LOUD. Today, or in the past year, we should hear about any
specific bad history on the Seagate Barracuda ATA IIIs and IVs, if anyone
out there has that history. So far, I've seen only good comments,
particularly from the Brits and the Europeans.

Below, I'm quoting from a very recent thread on another list, beginning with
my own comments.

QUOTE
My Quicksilver G4/733 came with an IBM 40GB 5400 RPM drive which I can hear
upon spinup and spindown; I also hear the heads working. I have added a
Seagate Barracuda ATA IV 40GB 7200 RPM drive (ST340016A) which I cannot
hear. This is my startup drive for both OS X and 9.2 in separate volumes.
Various catalogs, including MacZone, carry Seagate. Seagate has a very
informative web site.

My G4/733 is at the Apple shop so the OEM 60GB Maxtor drive can be
replaced (I am one of the contributors to that Macintouch report).

I have yet to hear of a complaint about the Seagate Barracuda ATA IV
series... (unlike Maxtor, IBM, Western Digital or Quantum).

I wasn't just the 75GB drive but the all the drives in the 75GXP
series, especially the ones that came from Hungry - I'm on my third
one at the moment (the first died after about 6 months, the
replacement sounded like a jumbo taking off and the third has been
going strong for over 12 months).
