Don't know what happended, strange that the connection stalls again after 5MB
of data transfer.
You could try a 10/100 PCI Ethernet card, dunno if a Siemens will work, have
never used one myself, see if you can find drivers for it at Siemens' site. I
do know that AsanteFAST 10/100 cards work very well in a Mac, we used to and
still use them in older Macs which don't have built-in 100 MBit Ethernet. Stay
away from Daynaport 10/100 cards, we used to use those first, but everyone we
had have died, we even received some DOAs at that time.

But the problems you describe with the DHCP IP numbers assigned to the B&W by
the cable modem looks like that there lies the problem.
I had a similar problem where my B&W received a strange DHCP IP from my router
and no data transfer possible, I tried everything, really everything, until I
figured out the power adapter from the router was a bit out of the power outlet
box, really strange because the router was working and my bro's PC could
connect to the internet, when I pushed the power adapter a bit down my Mac
received a normal IP number and could connect to the internet again.

I think the best thing you can do is look up your Mac hardware address (TCP/IP
cp and then open the Info box) and ask them to reset that address.
