You can replace the DVD-ROM in your G4 DP/450 for as low as $50 US with a CD-RW, a DVD-ROM/CD-RW or even a DVD-RW, or a DVD-RAM. (it's *really* easy with our towers) I just picked up a Sony CRX175A1 24/10/40 IDE CD-RW (manufactured 26 March 2002) for $75 CDN ($50 US) from a local shop (no software, no docs, just the drive in a plastic baggy, OEM). It boots my B&W G3, has "Burn Proof" and seems to be burning Ok in Toast (and, according to the OS X Apple System Profiler OS X supports it with built-in burning too). CD-RWs and DVD-ROM/CD-RW burners have come down in price nearly 50% in the past 6 months. You can pick up a DVD-ROM/CD-RW combo drive that'll burn at a decent speed for ~$120 CDN ($80 US). It took me longer to read the installation instructions (available at <http://www.xlr8yourmac.com>) and to find a screwdriver (b/c I'd misplaced my own box) than it did to install the drive. (the only glitch I had was that I discovered I hadn't properly fastened my SCSI drive when I installed it last month so I had to take some extra time to reposition it and make sure everything was fastened properly). XLR8 Your Mac also has a "Drive Database" that lists people's experience with a wide variety of drives, which drives worked, which didn't, which ones booted, which ones didn't, etc. PS For drives, check out the list sponsor, <http://www.smalldog.com>. I'm sure they have some CD-RWs or DVD/CD-RWs that could be used to replace your internal DVD-ROM. Well, first CD is done. Burned a CD-RW at 4x (max rated for media & max Toast would allow me to burn at (does Toast 5.1.3 know the media max? or is this CD-RW drive not all it's cracked up to be ;)) Eric. -- G-List is sponsored by <http://lowendmac.com/> and...
