>I leave my win98 machine connected with no firewall and I have had no
>problems at all.

I view that statement the same as "I don't have
car/medical/home/renters insurance and I've had no problems at all".
You could go your whole life without being in a car accident or
having your home burglarized or your computer broken into, but how
much are you willing to bet that those things will never happen?
Firewalls for the bandwidth ordinary people have are a cheap, one
time cost insurance policy, that may save you from having to cancel
all your credit cards, or explain to your ISP how it wasn't really
you participating in the DDoS attack, just your computer.
