Thanks, everybody, for your opinions and suggestions.  It's still 
dead, but we've closed in on the part that's dead.
I've gotten hold of another G3 tower that runs to use for swap 
testing.  I've determined that the cpu, ram, video ram, and hard 
drive are good.  They work in the other good G3.  And the known good 
mother board boots up and runs in the previously dead case and power 
supply.

So, mystery fans, the butler did it in the pantry with the motherboard.

The dead mother board acts the same in both cases: after popping out 
the battery and doing the reset button, the fan comes on and the 
keyboard lights flash when either power button is pressed, and then 
no further activity or blue screen.  It won't do this again until I 
do the battery/reset dance again.
