I (still) don't believe that it is "illegal". (Which law does it break? Apple's policy isn't law.) However I understand that Dan doesn't want to deal with Apple's lawyers harassing him, and has asked us not to attract their attention. A simple solution for anyone looking for anything on the web is to go to Google. Search for "Apple manuals" and you'll find them in seconds. Let Apple sue Google and see how far they get. Apple does have a list of manuals it won't sue you for reading, at http://www.info.apple.com/support/manuals.html. These don't encourage DIY repairs, though, eg "Do not attempt to replace the clock battery yourself. If the clock begins to lose accuracy, have an Apple-authorized service provider replace the battery."
