The CD-ROM drive in my B&W G3 (which I just overclocked to 350Mhz, yay)
appears to be a bone-standard drive.. I'm wondering if I can just slap a
CD-RW (like one of the 8/4/32 Plextors) in there and have it work, or does it
require any special Apple ROMs, etc?

I bought an 8/4/24 CD-R/W which was branded LaCie, but was really made by
Panasonic (Matsushita), and it turned out to be bootable. Fully recognized by
Toast 4 and later, too.

Normally, Brand-X drives ... particularly CD-R/Ws ... are not bootable.

So, in this specific case, there was no need for an Apple-branded drive.

However, in many cases an Apple-branded drive is necessary in order for it to
be bootable.
