OS 9.1 won't do you any harm (in fact, it is fairly stable). My instinct says that it's a driver problem. Perhaps you might want to do a low-level format and re-initialise the drive(s) using Apple's HD Utilities (if they'll work with your drive). M$ Word 5.1a is *ancient* by today's standards (11 years?). I'm utterly amazed that it still runs in OS 9, and, chances are that it isn't totally happy with 32 bit addressing (since it is a pre/early-System 7 version), can't handle too much RAM or doesn't like being in "high memory" (more later). If you do run Internet Explorer, I would *strongly* recommend upgrading to the latest available version (5.1.? for OS 9). It is remarkably stable & is still quite zippy (especially on a G3). PS I once ran into a problem (soon after I upgraded from 192 MB to 320 MB RAM) that an app (old version of PhotoShop & Word, I think) wouldn't open if enough programs had been opened & were still open (presumably sending it into "higher" memory), or if its RAM setting was too large (I bumped it up to 250 MB for the fun of it)... I think virtual memory was off as well (can't remember details). Anyway, I'm hungry. Eric. -- G-List is sponsored by <http://lowendmac.com/> and...
