Yes that is correct ...

Sadly, yes.

The original FirmTek firmware design, as used in the ACARD UATA/33 card which
was distributed in the U.S. as the ProMax TurboMax card, required
reinitializing each drive which was to be used with the UATA card.

This significant restriction (flaw) has been propagated to subsequent
products, both FirmTek's own and also FirmTek's competitors'.

Quite a few years ago there was a UATA-to-SCSI converter from Japan which did
not require such reinitializing. However, this product only supported UATA
drives which were specifically marked as having Apple Firmware.

The cards based upon the FirmTek firmware concept (and its clones) will
support just about any UATA drive, but the drives must be reinitialized when
going from direct EIDE/UATA motherboard connection to connection through a
UATA card.

The Japanese design was originally available only for 2.5" drives, but it is
just now available for 3.5" drives. There are minimum quantities (in the
thousands) and there are no sales to individuals.

ACARD's "SCSI Bridge" product, which attaches to the bottom of a 3.5" drive,
supports both U-SCSI (50-pin; as of this year) and UW-SCSI (for several years
now). This product needs no PCI card, and is therefore useful for any
SCSI-based Mac, including NuBus Macs. This product also requires
reinitialization.
