Would that cause it to turn off? I also tried plugging in an external monitor into the back VGA port. It just turns on, and turns off a few seconds later. It's not that I just don't get video signal...it turns off. And I'm going to sell it as soon as I get it working again...so I'd really rather not join the iMac list.
