I don't know if this has ever been posed:
But it was a revelation to me: Maybe it will
help someone out:--

Just a FYI. I have a B&W g3 Upgraded with a
sonnets g4 400 card and 512 megs of ram.
I have never been able to get any decent
speed to run photoshop or illustrator or do
any really intensive filters or tasks at a
acceptable speed while running os x. I have
30 gig drive installed and added another 30 gig
hard drive about a month ago for more storage.
Both drives were 5400 rpm drives. Last week I
added a 60 gig drive, it was a 7200 rpm drive.
I used retrospect and copied my old system over
to this drive. I have never had speeds with
os x like I have now. I guess to make a long
story short, if you have a g3 desktop or a b&w
g3 thats a little doggish..and you've put a
ton of ram in it and X isn't any faster like
everyone says, swap out the stock 5400 rpm
drive for a 7200 rpm drive. It makes a big
difference in the speed of X.
