Hello G-Listers:
I don't know what I did in fact, but I dl'd Ryan
Rempel's* XPostFacto, ran it from an OS9 partition
with the installer for OSX inside the CD-Rom - again
the installer refused to recognize the first partition
(Todd Stauffer's book on X says you can do a
re-install as the best way of replacing corrupt files
and not erase your HDD) that has OSX.
But what happenned next - I rebooted to an external
SCSI that has a back-up OSX (that by the way never
refused to see the recalcitrant OSX internal
partition, nor its lesser neighbour with OS9) - and
chose the internal partition as the new start-up disk
and got something I never saw before - a black and
white Apple logo (like on the towers) and a twirling
cursor also B&W.
So it booted!
Now I am reluctant to shut the computer off.
Thanks to all, esp. Richard Reed - yes, XPostFacto
does work with Beige (are you listening, Jim Arnott?)
and the explanations and web-page help are very
useful.
Donations, anyone? If you have the dough, this guy's*
worth it.
I will test further - I still think the IDE busses are
flaky - how to troubleshoot them - any advice?. The
cables are original and look good. The internal HDD
tests fine with Disk Utility and a commercial product.
Cheers
George
