Apple 'branded' parts are only someone else's parts
with an Apple ROM (in pre-OSX days), e.g. HDD, CD-Rom,
FDD, SCSI cards, etc.
Now, the parts are merely off-the-shelf and can be
readily used cross-platform.
Integrating components into the mob is done by many
firms, incl. Apple.
"Apple is a technology company, not a consumer co." is
true, but that varies over time.
In a response to price-gouging by clone makers with
attitude, Open Source people readily make available
drivers for abandoned HW (yes, not just SW is
abandoned) for a Linux-type OS. There are more
flavours of Linux (incl. PowerPC) than I can count,
and 90% are free.
Even governments have or are starting to use Open
Source. The days of SW makers (incl. M$) dictating the
HW you 'need' are soon over.
Merry Christmas, everyone!

"Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all
thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with
 all thy strength, and with all thy mind;
 and thy neighbour as thyself."
