Is the DVD player a standalone unit? Some standalone DVD players, 
especially early models, have trouble reading CD-R discs, as the laser 
in a DVD player has a different wavelength than the one in a CD player. 
You may want to try a CD-RW, since the DVD laser has a better chance of 
reading one, as the CD-RW surface is optically closer to a DVD than a 
CD-R. Newer DVD players generally use two lasers, one designed to read 
CDs and one designed to read DVDs
