It replaces the original cd drive. The advantage is that you can use iDVD with it. iDVD won't work with any other drive, nor will it work with a "Superdrive" mounted externally in any way. So if you intend to burn video DVDs,a bare Pioneer drive,is the way to go. You'll need a G4 for iDVD. I think it is the cheapest option too.
