--- You wrote: Ok. If you put it a Firewire card you can capture video in DV format if you have the outbord equipment to do it. There are several options out there, the Hollywood Video Bridge by Dazzle is just one. They go for about $250. I went for a digital camcorder for $500, the Canon ZR 40, which can take analog video from any source, and send it to the computer by firewire. --- end of quote --- Please let me add or clarify just a bit. You can add a firewire card for $50 or less. I chose to put in a combination usb/firewire card for about $80 since I wanted to save a pci slot. Now all my slots are in use (combination usb/firewire, Radeon video board, ATA 133 disk controller.)
I'm not sure I was clear about digital camcorders. Not all can convert analog video to digital on the fly (i.e.without recording to tape first.) The Canon zr 40 and several of their more expensive models can do it. There may be others out there too, but don't just assume any digital camcorder can be used this way. I should also mention that dv video stream files are very big. You have to figure about 13 gigabytes for an hour of video. So a big drive (or two) is essential for this kind of work. 80 gig drives can be had for $100 these days so that's another cost to consider.
