It sounds like the game uses a multisession format, with the music
held in a separate "partition" (I'm not sure if partition is really
the right word, hence the quotes).

Heh-
I've got an ancient version of Toast running on OS 9.2.2 on a Beige,
and it can burn multi-session cds- but the extra sessions don't show
up when the cd is in the SCSI burner; I guess the extension included
with that old Toast can't handle multiple sessions! They show up fine
in the original internal (ATAPI?) cd drive.
