I used to experience similar problems with a B&W G3. It turned  out to 
be a problem related to the internal zip drive/iomega driver. I heard 
that there  was some  sort of conflict between the Iomega driver and 
the Apple CD/DVD driver. The solution for me  was to not have the 
Iomega driver load at startup. When I want to use a Zip disk I use the 
guest application.
