Hi. I'm pretty sure that the beige machines' memory controller can't see
more that 256 MB per slot. You may be able to put a 512-er in a slot but,
if it works at all, you'll only see 256.
Most PC133 SDRAM (not DDR) sticks should work. I just got a 128 133 MHz
stick out of an Office Depot special last week -- it seems to work fine,
but the machine can only see 64 MB of it. Oh well, I guess I'll keep it. It
was only $25 -- $12 after a rebate, & $12 is on the low end of new 64 MB
sticks anyway, plus I'm sure I'd have to pay a restocking fee, given the
nearly impossible plastic packaging that I wound up cutting through with a
knife. (PNY brand, FWIW.)
It's probably because it only has 4 chips on it. I read that you should
look for 256's that had 16 chips, on both sides, but I guess you should
look for 128's that have 8 chips, as well. Anyway, when I upgrade to a New
World machine, I should get the full benefit. Altho' by that time a 128
may well look like peanuts...
