This is correct for all the earlier systems. Apple's DVD player 2.7 
works great in OS 9 on unsupported systems, and the earliest supported 
systems. The DVD player for OSX  (3.1 and up) works only with Apple 
models that also had built in firewire. Not sure how the presence of 
firewire would affect just a player, but there's a couple of KB 
articles on it. It certainly true with a Summer 2000 G3/350 iMac.  No 
player for OSX, boot into 9 to watch DVD's.

With the Summer 200 400DV, and later models which included firewire, 
Apple's DVD player 3.1 works fine under OSX.
