please forgive this overly complicated and yet very n00b question. hopefully you can help me with some advice about details i couldn't find. this will be my first apple system. i hope i'm in the right place?
i have been offered a used g4/400, which i believe is a first generation machine, and suspect it is the "yikes!" PCI-based machine after looking it up. 128mb ram and a 17" apple monitor that came with it upon purchase is being offered to me for 650$ US. (i am converting this from Canadian $.)
i was originally considering paying for a 17" flatscreen iMac for 1999$ US and i cannot possibly figure out what is a better value in the longterm. the programs i plan on using this for are:
OS X photoshop (whatever version i can run best on the machine i choose) painter 7 or 8 (if possible)
and these, with a Wacom digital tablet and an iPod, which i am pretty sure is possible with both of these.
as i understand it, a yikes machine is a fairly weak system altogether, but does the price i was quoted reflect this? also, i have not been told that it is a "yikes!" machine, it is only what i suspect from what i was told about it after looking it up with the info i have. it can't possibly be more than a "Sawtooth" though. (at which point i assume i should jump on it?) i figured if the second hand machine was a decent price, i could pay the 650$ for it and eventually buy a more powerful machine for the difference when they lowered in price.
also, the machine in question, whatever it is, has a DVD-ROM installed and comes with a hockey puck mouse. i think that's all the relevant info.
any advice you guys could give me would be great; i feel impossibly overwhelmed by all this info.
thanks,
julien
