Im becoming increasingly unimpressed with X as well... And Im getting tiredI can't speak to DVD applications, but I can relate to common business usage. I have a Dual 867 here with 1028MB of RAM and a 60 and 1290 GB HD running 10.2.6. I also have a wintel 1.4GHz P4, with 1028 of RAM and a single 60G HD running XPpro. With such apps as Word, Excel, Acrobat, Photoshop Elements, etc.. The Mac is either faster than the wintel box, or there is no measurable difference. As far as the internet goes, the Mac with Safari beats the wintel box with MSIE 6, consistently, at rendering pages.
of switching back and forth between start up discs (even switching start up
discs takes half the time in OS9) to do anything other than everyday
consumer stuff. ( and not real impressed by Macs slowness on the internet
compared to a much slower pc either) I finally became somewhat content
when I had an 800mhz DA (133 bus) with a 64mb Radeon8500 and a gig of ram.
But even with that setup OSX was barely as smooth and responsive as my
G4/450 in OS9 in my B&W. Aside from the excellent terminal interface you
now get with X, its seems mostly fluff and simple conveniences, which are
nice, but not at such a seemingly large sacrifice in performance for people
who use their Macs for production purposes.
Just my experience, your mileage may vary.
