Because it's a tool to encourage sale of Apple computers with Superdrives. To their way of thinking they have a DVD editing/creation program for the world: Final Cut.They are odd this way. They limit the use of iDVD to machines with "superdrives" internal only. Why?
When OWC fixed this Apple made them stop. They never did a complete cease and desist of OS9 booting, only selected models would not support it. There's always been available, some Apple product, that would boot into OS9. Now they have made this capability standard for the end of life G4 towers. These models may still continue as a BTO even after the G5 is launched?
They saw to it that new machines would not boot into pre X operating systems,
though apparently this is no longer true.
Nothing so nefarious to my way of thinking. Just pure economics. It's costly ( in dollars and time) to write everything to accommodate two completely different operating systems. It's nothing new, we went with through the same thing with the advent of the PowerPC.
If they are trying to develop software that isn't limited by preexisting
hardware, it makes some sense. But by their track record, they also want to
control certain things for their own purposes. My Beige machine has lots of
life left in it, so I hope this doesn't stand.
No matter what, you'll still be able to run 10.2.6 on your beige MT or DT. That's not a bad thing for a computer that began in 1997. (That's the *stone age* in the marketplace of computers.)I figure I'll never be able to run 10.3 on my PTP, but that won't make it one bit less valuable for the things I use it for. Apple is not saying you have to give up your Gossamer G3, just that 10.3 will not be Apple supported. Ryan Remple may very possibly come up with a version of XPosFacto for 10.3? If so OWC will have it available.
