Cross-platform, too, if you burn the disk on your Mac using "Mac OS and PC (Hybrid)" format. All of my device burning (PALs, EPROMs, EEPROMs, using a universal device programmer) and PCI card FLASHing (yes, including conversions of PC PCI cards into Mac cards, by well-known means) is done on a Pentium/166 PC. Searching and downloading of firmware is done on my trusty Mac, or Macs, all of which are on my broadband intranet, and which are connected to the internet via a firewall. The Pentium PC is not connected to the intranet, so "sneaker net", in the form of a 700 MB CD is usually used to transfer data to the PC. Normally, data never goes from the PC to the Mac, although the PC has the capability to burn CDs. Even to duplicate CDs, which is one of its other (few) functions. There are few options for true cross-platform storage: 1.44 MB floppies, 100 MB Zips, 700 MB CDs, and 1.5 GB SyJets. My Pentium PC supports 100 MB Zips and 700 MB CDs, but I have long since removed floppies and Zips from all Beige MTs, replacing these with DVD burners, CD burners or huge capacity hard drives. One Beige still supports DDS-2 tapes (which the PC also supports), but boot hard drive backups are now done to CD-Rs or to partitions on a huge hard drive. That leaves 700 MB CDs as the true cross-platform media. And, that also works for digital photography, too, where the 700 MB CD is the best (only ?) choice. Certainly, any future laptop I buy (not necessarily a Mac, I'm sad to say) will have a CD burner. Alas, my two Wallstreets (presently "shelfware", due to power manager problems) do not offer CD burners, although they do have CD-ROMs/DVDs. -- G-List is sponsored by <http://lowendmac.com/> and...
