I've been upgrading a Beige 266 for a friend. It has an internal GV
comm slot modem. I just realized that there were firmware updates for
this modem available via Apple Software Downloads. When I flashed to
the V.90 update, the modem's connection jumped from 33.6 to 49, a nice
50% increase. Considering the computer has used the slower, original
firmware since new in '98, and the update was dated Jan.'99, I felt I'd
really accomplished something for my friend. Now I see that there is
also a CD player firmware update. I've done quite a bit of Mac
updating, and read many of these forums. No one ever mentioned these
beige firmware updates. They don't show on Software Update in OS9 or
OSX. I really had problems installing OS X because of the CD player
being very problematic. I bet if I'd updated the CD firmware it would
have gone better? I'm posting this to remind any beige owners that
there are some fairly critical firmware updates for their hardware, and
that checking their versions might be a good idea. Unfortunately, I
can't tell you how to check the version. System Profiler didn't show
the modem version in either OS 9 or OS X. The speed increase, and the
fact the the Update ReadMe stated that 33.6 was the old firmware max.
was all I had to know that I'd actually updated from an older version.
Still, very worthwhile. Kris Tilford
