Greetings all,
Thought I'd give you an update on this issue, perhaps with more evidence
someone much brainier than I (on OS X at least) can assist me.
1) I reset the Cuda and the power switches as per instructions in the
service source manual.
2) swapped discs, using another copy of OS 10.2
- tried to boot into OS 9 - no go: got some error bomb regarding system
map error, and to reboot w/ ext. off; tried, still same bomb
3) booted up OS X CD, ran Disc utility to make sure that the OS 9 drivers
were added to the HD's formatting process (still would like to know if
there's an OS X way for zeroing out HD).
4) rebooted in OS 9 (and 9.2.1) - still same bomb
5) swapped DVD drive for original, known-to-work OEM 32x CD-ROM
rebooted in OS 9 etc. - still same bomb
6) booted in OS X - got to install process just fine (as I always have)
ok, so maybe this machine is destined to NOT use OS 9, let's see if I
can get X on it.
7) Got halfway through the install process when suddenly the screen froze
and big white streaks appeared on the screen. Rebooted:
8) The unit actually started to reboot WITHOUT the CD, at least it got to
silver and grey splash screen (the modern Happy Mac?) - it appeared
for ten seconds, then the big white streaks and frozen screen came back
- I force-rebooted, this time holding "C" key down (maybe there's only
1/2 an OS X on the HD), got it to read, 10 seconds of silver grey logo,
white streaks.
9) Shut down, replaced video card with the OEM ATI Rage 128, tried to
restart: same white streaks. There we are, bad to worse.
To summarize:
Through all this I never could get the unit to recognize OS 9 successfully,
hence no zero-out opportunity, nor a chance to run TTPro 3 to test the RAM.
Performance was (apparently) the same regardless of CD drive or disk.
The white streaks are (apparently) not video card related.
Anyone know what the scoop is? If it's bad RAM, it wasn't bad consistently..
(progressive deterioration would be my description not consistent level of
failure) is this indicative of firmware-based units?
Forgive the long post colleagues; thank you for reading.
Best regards,
Dana
