OK, so they say you're the G3 king.. Tell me how.. Short of removing the 
battery for 24 hours, tell me how on earth I'm supposed to do this.

OK, I know the four keys used. The question is: When? And in what order? 
Before the chime, after the chime during the chime? All four 
simeltaneously or in order? Aren't I supposed to hear a chime back at me? 
How long before it chimes at me? 

I try on my beige G3. I try on an old SE/30. I've tried on a purple imac. 
I refuse to believe in the trick until its proven conclusively to me.

This might explain the black screen, but shouldn't I get the CAN'T OPEN: 
error instead?

Neither is a solution when you can't boot and you can't seem to master a 
simple key combo. :)
