Based on your "fix", I strongly suggest that you buy some Radio Shack Contact Cleaner ( not the brand with the lube stuff added) and a stiff brush and clean the contacts of both the RAM cards and the MOBO RAM slots
"Dirty" contacts due to aging is a common problem with older Power macs.
