HFS+ is HFS+, regardless of the OS that uses it. DW 2.1.1 will work 
when booted from CD (the only way worth bothering with, anyway) and 
does not damage the OS X file structure.

I'd suspect that the problem with booting your G3 from the DW3 CD is 
the ZIF upgrade.
