Hello all,
I am still having problems with my G3 7100/240. The hard drive has completely disappeared from the desktop, even using Norton or OS 8.6 as start up disks. I am now at a complete loss.
Bear in mind that this is a the original paltry little 160 MB HD and it was running OS 8.1 until I decided to upgrade to 8.6. Never got the chance, the hard disk vanished when I restarted and held down the "C" key.
Ideas, suggestion, prayers!! This is my 5 year olds Jumpstart computer.
TIA,
Dan
First, go back to your OS 8 disk and reinstall it. (Did you jump from 8.1 to 8.6 without 8.5? I couldn't do that with my 7100). When I upgraded to 8.6 after installing 8.5, I found that the computer was unstable and would constantly freeze or do other funky things such as that which you describe. Going back to 8.5, solved the stability problems, though it was still slow as molasses in January. I found that 8.1 was best suited for this ancient machine.
You might try the Disk First Aid that comes with the OS, if you haven't already.
I once had a disappearing drive that was found after zapping the PRAM and restarting using the CD-ROM.
Check all connexions.
I'm sure there are other things to look at as well that others may be able to suggest.
