There was one point I had left out and that was the complete reinstall of system OS 8.6 and all software that was done last week. Well, yesterday I noticed the reinstalled system was not HFS + so tonight I erased the hard drive and reinstalled everything all over again with HFS+ and now the disk is readable.
The startup disk's format had absolutely nothing to do with the Zip drive not being read; however, the nuke and re-install clearly fixed what was wrong...probably a problem with the Zip drivers.
