The letter I got said it referred to Apple's claim that OSX would work with DVDs but that it didn't. My rev 2 beige doesn't have a dvd so I threw the letter in the trash.
I don't know why I hadn't heard of this case before.
Is it a scam?
No it's not a scam. Well, execpt for the big cut the lawyers get.
Apple basically said Mac OS X would be fully functional on *ALL* Macs, G3 and later. But it turns out that a number of standard OS X features don't work on older G3s, because Apple never bothered to write/provide certain drivers. Furthermore, OS X is abysmally slow and unstable on those machines. These problems were never fixed, and Apple refused to give refunds.
Under the terms of the class action settlement, Apple now has to cough refunds. But as is typical in corporate america, they don't have to admit to any wrong doing or provide fixes.

The catch, I believe, is that it only covers customers that bought Mac OS X at full retail, in California. The rest of us stay screwed.
