The Beige is limited to 16.67 MB/sec, which is a LOT less than the 
internal transfer rate of the drive (about 40 MB/sec) or the practical 
external transfer rate (about 20-33 MB/sec).

Yes, 2 MB is enough.

I think is was WD which first popularized the 8 BM cache. But, that was 
needed because WD's caching algorithms were inferior to those in otherwse 
identical drives which had only 2 MB.

Problem was, both drives were made by IBM, and IBM's caching algorithms 
were far, far better than WDs.

(WD no longer is rebranding IBM drives as its own).
