As far as OS I wouldn't recommend putting OSX unless you upgrade the
processor to about 400 MHZ G3, and the RAM to 512. 384mb is marginal but
probably ok. Some do run X on slower processors and are satisfied though.
Some kids put X on 233 iMacs just so they can get tunes from the iTunes
music store. Any other OS should work well. I have liked 8.6, 9.1 and 9.2
for my Macs. Almost all apps that run on 8 should run on 9. I put 9.1 on my
college daughter's 233 bondi iMac and runs better than 8.6 did she says.

If you don't want to pay out for a video card at least put in the 4mg vram
chip. Get one when you buy ram to save on shipping- they're cheap and easy
to install. Even simple games will tend to run quicker and smoother. The 2
mb of vram onboard is really skimpy.

I noticed the same thing on prices last yr and put a 400 zif in my Beige G3
to replace the 266 that was in there when I got it- overclocked it to 433,
and it was a nice increase in performance. I sold the 266 zif on eBay and it
was fairly inexpensive overall and definitely worth it.

yes, for this week.
