Bonnie,

In general it's fine to install 10.x on a partition with 9.2 on it. However, in your case, since you have a large partitioned disk you'll have to put 10.1 on the "first" partition. If OS 9 is on the first partition you can proceed.

If you need to reformat, use Disk Utility from the OS 10 install CD (disk #1). When you break up a large disk into many parts the OSes have to be on the first partition. That simply means the partition at the top of the Volume Scheme. This is hard to describe in writing. I have pictures online. Go to this page:

http://homepage.mac.com/gaschu/help/os_troubleshooting/ os_10.1_disk_utility/index.html

and page down to the 2nd to the last pic. You'll see what the "Partition" function of disk utility looks like. If you any more questions feel free to email me off list.

Hi. I would like to try to install 10.1 on my beige 266. I currently have a
5 GB partition that has OS 9.2 on it. Can I install 10.1 on this partition
also? If this is not a good idea, is there a way to divide another partition
(20 GB) so I have a partition with the required 8 GB. Can I do this without
reformatting the entire drive? How would I make the new partition the first
partition? Right now the 5 GB with 9.2 is the first partition.
