I know that X uses a whole different method of memory management than 9. What I am trying to figure out is how much memory do I need to run X without getting into using the hard disk for swapping. I know the minimum recommended is 256 Meg.

More memory is always better. That being said, X uses a whole different method of memory management; swap happens. With > 256 megs of ram it's not a noticeable problem.
