Indexing allows you to find files based on the content of the document rather than just the name of the file. Sherlock indexed the hard drive starting in 9.0 if memory serves. It was a bit notorious for slowing down the drive and/or crashing the OS all together. Most times us techies would simply turn off indexing.

I think I setup indexing for my home directory some time ago. Around 2AM I notice my mouse starts to get jittery and I can hear my drives working. It's possible to turn on indexing by right clicking on any drive or folder and choosing Get Info. I see a button to start or stop it, but no way to schedule it.
