This evening something very strange is happening. I cannot get to the finder and all my hard drive partitions are gone. The firewire does not show up either, and when I put in a CD, it does not show up on the desktop. I can open anything that is in the dock, but if it is not in the dock I can't get to it. When I open something in the dock, say Appleworks, I can open files and can see all the drives and partitions etc. but, of course, can only open files that Appleworks can read. The bar at the top of the screen is there, so I can connect to the internet from that, and Mail is in the dock so I can send this message. I tried restarting, but nothing changed. I can't get to the disk utility, and since I can't use the CD drive I can't use the disk utility from the CD. I can open the system profiler (since I can do this from the menu) and it shows everything that is supposed to be there. Does anyone have any idea about what is going on here? Or how I can fix it?
