This exercise revealed that the CD player of my G3 can't play certain CDs. The player will boot most disks else how could I be typing this Email in Panther? Unless the Panther install was 99.999 % OK but the 0.001 % failed install causes this problem? Maybe the next update will fix it?
Eric,
You CD player and the disk you burned may not be flaky at all.
I am still struggling to figure out what it is about the Desktop Rebuilt that destroys my "connection" between OS 9 and OS 10. I can not boot from OS 9 into OS 10.3 If I try, one of the side issues is the CD drive gets flaky too. I have figured out how to fix that part on my G3B&W. Try putting your newly burned CD in the tray - shut down - zap the PRAM on start up - then hold down the "C" key.

Thanks Nancy. I tried zapping the pram with the DiskWarrior disk I made but my G3 ignores the CD. The G3 boots into OS 9.1 and up pops the sign "Do you want to initialize this disk".
But that same disk in my burner is visible as a bootable disk with full use in OS 9.1. So that makes me suspect the CD player. I ordered From Alsoft the DiskWarrior 3.0.1 CD as a further adventure ( if I don't get a CD player in the meantime). One price is $ 99USD for a 24X player from a local Mac store. There my be cheaper units.
