I solved my Panther problem of no reboot that came from operator screw up. I learned a lot tho like don't work late at night with new software that can change your permissions!!

I downloaded software Cocktail which is a disk utility with a lot of tools like force empty trash ( I bet many have that) and do disk utilities and set pemissions. Somehow I deleted Cocktail and that's when the problems of no reboot, no shut down, etc. began.

But being in some kind of fog, I couldn't connect the Cocktail with loss of permissions. The fog lifted and I reinsalled Cocktail and ran a restore program. It's a good program but don't play with it when your sleepy.

I learned more about the terminal of how to shut down:
Force shut down by typing in the terminal shell "sudo shutdown -h now" (thanks to Bruce Johnson)
To reboot, enter sudo reboot
Sudo stands for superuser that executes a sudoers file. Type man subject to open a manual page on subject. More info than Mac treminal help.

Unix for Mac OS X by O'reilly is good for a start (140 pages).

There is a very fine line between "hobby" and "mental illness."
