Hi all:

I want to replace my existing stock CD-R in my B&W with a DVD/CD-RW
burner. However, I'd like to be be able to boot from it. Any
recommendations? It doesn't have to be the latest HDW, and the DVD is not
critical, 12-20x cd burn speed would be adequate.

I used this site to put the Toshiba Combo drive in my B/W 450:

Also mine has an internal Zip drive (100meg model) I'm planning to get rid
of it. Is there an alternate faceplate available to replace the "zip" one?

Yes. They can be found on eBay. Mine was the opposite of yours. I put a Zip drive in and got a face plate off eBay. I'd offer you my old face plate, but it was damaged on the Mac by the previous owner.
