If a user has forgotten their password, simply boot from the OS X cd and change it.

it scares
me a bit. I put a password in place on that machine to give some protection
against idle curiosity, etc. and safeguard data. This seems to avoid those
protections. Or is there a way to setup firewire disk mode to require the
entry of the password, just as booting the machine would require the
password? Thanks in advance.

FileVault in 10.3 will do this, but in my opinion FileVault is a good idea whose time definitely has NOT come. I've heard of too many horror stories, and don't wish to entrust all my data to a single, corruptible file.

Basically however, this isn't really an issue: you have to have physical possession or access to the computer to do this, so the fact that passwords don't work is minor. FWT mode is for eas of transfer of files to and from another computer you own. An analogy would be worrying that if someone tows your car into their garage they can then start it without having the key.

You can set a password in Open Firmware, which I believe would require entry even for this, but again, this is a dangerous thing: a forgotten OF password is not a trivial thing to fix.
