If you want to run a local network with your two Macs while having internet access with one or both of them, you need to put a router between your modem and your Macs. The ISP will see the router and not the Macs. The router will allow each Mac to see each other and to access the internet. Look at your Finder Help function for setting this up, say under "network". Also, look at Apple's web pages for support.
