Install the memory first and make sure it works with an os that you know
works. Panther will install a lot quicker with the extra ram too as I think
128MB is the bare minimum it will run with. I installed panther on a 128meg
iBook and it was hellishly slow when using apps like photoshop 7 and running
things under emulation in os 9. Moral of this story, whack it full of
memory, also you should upgrad os 9 to os 9.2.2 before you install panther
for better compatibility.

I personally have never had a problem installing panther, jaguar or cheetah
on any of the machines here at work and i've installed em lots n lots
(freelancers tend to break the os as soon as they lay their hands on it)
your data should be safe, just make sure you dont do a format and install
;o). If your REALLy worried about the integrity of yur data then by all
means back it up to a removabel media

Hope this helps
