Thanks for all the replies. The consensus seems to be RAM, RAM, and more RAM... and maybe a processor upgrade... and other stuff only as needed.
IIRC, The G4 zif will only make a real difference in OS X (correct me if I'm wrong). Also a video card will only be relevant in OS X, or for heavy gaming (which I no longer have time for... sigh...), or for graphics (which I rarely do these days).
