since someone mentioned getting a spark to their machine, i thought i'd mention a tip
for
those with newish carpet and static problems (older carpet usually has enough
accumulated
stuff not to be a problem, in my experience). it's easy, and cheap to make antistatic
spray for that carpet, and unlike some commercial products it won't bother people with
allergies (like me...).

all you have to do is fill a spray bottle with water and add just a couple of drops of
liquid dish soap or laundry detergent and spray on the carpet every couple of weeks.
it
leaves a slight residue, and those ionic surfactants in the detergent attract just a
little atmospheric moisture and make the carpet conductive enough to dissipate and not
build up static electricity. that's all that's in the commercial products by the way,
though they may have a fragrance as well. much cheaper than commercial products as
well
of course!

living in wyoming i know about static in dry air, last year there were standing trees
(still living) that were dryer than cured lumber in some parts of the state, and that
was
in the summer, in winter it gets ridiculous. this also helps avoid problems when
working
inside the computer, and unexpected crashes as well as data corruption and likely will
extend the life of your computer. when working inside the machine, avoid wearing
synthetics or silk, and fabric softener in the dryer will help as well.

apparently the worst combination (no, i haven't tried it...) is silk undergarments and
nylons....
